I know its not really a big deal but I just got this email and am super amped. I need to finish this semester obviously but wow. I made it. I started working on a two year degree in 2011. I went for over a year and lost interest, I wasn’t enough of an adult to stay responsible and commit like I needed to. I dropped out after letting my grades drop abysmally. I spent the next 5 years working in at several different jobs; Gas station attendant, Pizza shop cook, Grocery store clerk, and Appliance salesman, Throughout this time I saved up money when and where I could. Eventually I decided that I didn’t want to do this for the rest of my life. Thats when I decided to take my savings and invest in a college degree. I Would have to pay my way at first because I had destroyed my GPA. I dropped my decent paying job to go back to school. Now here I am, last semester and I’ll hopefully be expanding my career horizons exponentially. True its only a two year degree but its my foot in the door. I come from a poor family, my parents came form poor families, it wasn’t until two years ago that my father exceeded the “poverty level”, I will be the first person in my immediate family to get a college degree and that is just a huge honor. Anyway that all I got just wanted to share that. Thanks Oppo for being there, you guys are the best and honestly while I can’t pin it down to any particular users, reading about your lives and how many of you persisted towards your respective life goals was a major factor in my determination to go back to school and really reach for my dreams.

Congrats man, a job well done.
Do you plan to go for a 4 year degree at all? A large portion of your credits should transfer, it’s how I got my bachelors .

Yep, gonna get into work force ASAP and start working on a 4 year. In my spare time. Certifications are really going to be the next step since I’m in the computer field (cyber security).

While you may view it as only a two year degree, setting a goal and accomplishing it over several years is a big deal. Also because you messed up and were able to come back. I technically failed out of school and actually graduating was the greatest feeling of accomplishment.

Oh? Then I’d focus on K ubernetes/AWS and get to know docker, that is direction everyone is going. Probably want to start looking at applications like Dome9 and Evident IO as well if you are going to focus on security.

Congratulations! Hope you can jump back in to getting that Bachelor’s in person or online ASAP!
Also, I highly recommend this book despite what your adult mind is thinking.
One of my younger sisters got it for me when I got my B.S. and to my surprise, it was quite a satisfying read.

Congrats on graduating!
Being the first person to graduate is an amazing feeling I bet.
Keep working towards your goals and let nothing stop you.

Congrats! It is a huge accomplishment to be the first in the family to graduate with a degree. I know far too many people that do not take steps to try to break the poverty cycle they were born into. Granted this country doesn’t make it easy. It sounds like you have a solid plan moving forward. Keep up the good work!

Congratulations!!! I’m hoping to finish in 2020 and have been at it since Fall 2013. I haven’t been able to go full time because of my depression and anxiety and needing to work. It’s a huge achievement and I hope to join you one day. Be sure to do something to celebrate once your finished!!! You’ve worked so hard and your post made me feel better and inspired about my journey!
